Exchange Day

In the Winter, we fly people in and out of Sorcerer on Saturdays. In the Summer, we are more flexible. In order to make these days go as smoothly as possible, we do have some requirements.

First of all, we fly early in the mornings. Because Golden is too far from anywhere to plan on arriving on flight day, you must arrange to arrive the night before. We have recomendations for places to stay in Golden. Both mountain passes on the highways to the east and west are subject to frequent closures in the winter so you must give yourself some time. We will meet your group on Friday night to ensure that all questions are answered, all waivers are signed, all bags and boxes are properly packed for the helicopter, and that everyone knows exactly where to be and at what time the next morning. Because flying is always weather dependent, it’s crucial that everyone employs the ‘hurry up and wait attitude’. This means you are totally organised to fly the night before exchange day, but are relaxed enough to hang out a bit if the weather needs to clear. It is important you have not scheduled a flight out of Calgary for the day you depart from Sorcerer. Helicopters are dependable but the weather isn’t always so predictable.

In winter, we meet for breakfast at 6:00am! Our staging area is located at Heather Mountain Lodge, 55km West of Golden on HWY #1, and takes about 45 minutes to get to. We need to be at the staging area at 7:45 am to get organized for the heli safety talk. Its an early start however, we have the privilege of flying first. This gives us better weather, and ensures that we are first in line in the event of a weather delay. Being up and going early has served us well in the past.
